The work schedule for this position is:

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Information officer and general supervision of the Information officer, the incumbent exercises translation/editorial oversight of certain German-language Press Section publications, including German-language publications Amerika Dienst, which s/he puts on the Embassy's German-language homepage and emails to subscribers; provides the same editorial oversight for the content of German-language texts that are put on the internet. In producing the Amerika Dienst publication, the incumbent selects, analyses and, as necessary, re-writes, and translates English language materials into German and, German language materials into English.

Provides interpreting and translation of speeches for the Ambassador or other senior Embassy or U.S.Government officials, as required. The incumbent also proposes and develops special thematic German language publications as appropriate and assists in other Press Section activities as necessary.

Qualifications and Evaluations


EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years' of relevant translation/interpretation or journalistic experience as an editor is required.

- Extensive knowledge of the major national and regional newspapers and their editorial tendencies, and extensive knowledge of the major television and current events programs is required.

Education Requirements:

Graduate degree (BA) in translating and interpreting is required.


LANGUAGE:  Translator/Interpreter certified English and German language skills - speaking/reading/writing - are required.

- Translator and interpreter level language skills are required which includes grammar, syntax and word usage to enable the incumbent to select, analyze and translate texts in both languages.
- Excellent writing skills in German and English are required because the incumbent is expected to ensure that the translated text reflects the author’s communication level, and that the translated text is appropriate to the targeted audiences – a direct translation of the text is normally not sufficient.

This may be tested.

Agency Benefits:

Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Germany may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.

For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.

The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.
