Summary:

The U.S. Mission in Colombo is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of the Carpenter in the Facility Management section.


The work schedule for this position is: Full Time- 40 hours per week.


Start date: Candidate must be able to begin work within a reasonable period of time upon receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

This position performs routine repair and maintenance works and emergency repair works related to carpentry field in Embassy and other Office Buildings, Government owned (GO) Residential compound and other Short-Term Leased (STL) residential properties.

Duties

Basic Function of Position:
Incumbent of this position performs routine repair and maintenance works and emergency repair works related to carpentry field in Embassy and other Office Buildings, Government owned (GO) Residential compound and other Short-Term Leased (STL) residential properties. Carpentry field includes all repairs and maintenance works on wooden and sheet metal structures, drywall applications, wood members and trim products, doors, locks, shelves, windows (frames and screening),cabinets, closets, shipping crates, roofs, roofing structures, roofing auxiliaries, ceiling, wooden floors, floor carpets, insulation material and other general carpentry articles.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform all kind of carpentry and related works at Embassy compound, GO properties and USG controlled properties including all repairs and maintenance works on wooden and sheet metal structures, drywall applications, wood members and trim products, doors, locks, shelves, windows (frames and screening), cabinets, closets, shipping crates, roofs, roofing structures, roofing auxiliaries, ceiling, wooden floors, floor carpets, insulation material and other general carpentry articles. - 40%


Use hand tools, power tools, carpentry machinery proficiently and safely, select right material, technique and application for various carpentry works, follow standard wood preservative techniques and procedures, carry out refinishing and staining works and all carpentry works professionally and meeting highest trade standards and ICASS service standards - 20%


Handles all routine and emergency work order requests for carpentry systems, furniture assemblies, structural assemblies, floors, roofs, walls and serviceable carpentry installations - 20%


Evaluates assigned task(s) by reviewing blueprints, sketches & diagrams, and manufacturer's instructions as outlined in Owner's Manuals, and estimates materials, supplies, and equipment required to complete the work. Prepares a bill of materials for all assigned tasks and submits the list to the supervisor. When required and resources are available, incumbent coordinates task procedures with co-workers and assures task(s) are performed in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner. Incumbent is responsible for determining work procedures, diagnosing and correcting operational deficiencies, and suggests improved and cost-effective methods. - 10%


Inspect, evaluate and repair all water damages and mold formation in walls, ceiling, floors, roofs, concrete slabs, gutters and downspouts. Attend to any kind of spray painting work on metal, wood or engineered material. Carryout Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in government owned, Short-term-leased and Long-term-leased properties - 5%


All other related works to carpentry field and as directed by the supervisor - 5%

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum three years’ (03) experience in the carpentry trade in an establishment is required. Candidate must attach copies of relevant service/work experience certificates.


LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:
1) Level II (limited knowledge) Speaking/Reading English is required (This will be tested).
2) Level III (Good working knowledge) Speaking/Reading Sinhala and/or Tamil is required.


JOB KNOWLEDGE: Must have good working knowledge of carpentry raw material, material processing, trade techniques and standard carpentry practices, methods of wood treatments, material specifications and estimations. Should be able to use all carpentry hand tools, power tools, equipment and portable machinery proficiently and safely.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be able to correctly use tools of the trade, power equipment, power drills, hammer drills, miter saw and other portable carpentry equipment, Must be able to climb ladders and work on ladders from 25 feet and higher, work on scaffolding, and work on electric or mechanical man-life up to 50 feet or higher, Must have ability to design, build, install and repair standard carpentry items, structures and fixtures made from wood & other material.


Must have a valid Class B (formerly 'C, C1') driving license and have safe driving skills (This will be tested). Candidate must attach a copy of the driver’s license.

Education Requirements:

Attempted for G.C. E. Ordinary Level [Candidate must have sat for all or at least half (50%) of the required subjects] and have a vocational training certificate in carpentry field is required. Candidate must attach copies of relevant educational certificates.


 


 

Evaluations:

Language: Level II English Language Proficiency will be tested.


Skills and Abilities: Safe driving skills will be tested.

Qualifications:

Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), locally-resident EFMs and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Colombo may receive a compensation package that may include health and other benefits as per the Local Compensation Plan.


For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.


The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.
