Duties

Serves as the Military Affairs Advisor, Protocol Specialist, Translator, and provides office administrative support for the Defense Attaché Office (DAO).  Screens publicly available newspapers, press releases, periodicals, and electronic publications, containing military, technical, economic, and legal defense-related information.  Analyzes and summarizes important items of military and political interest for the DAO.  Keeps up with military affairs and follows the course of development and implementation of military plans, concepts, political decisions, military legislation, and strategies to report to DAO accordingly.  Translates various articles, documents, and all official correspondence from Bulgarian into English.  Provides translation/interpretation support to DAO and the Ambassador's office at military events, official visits, receptions, and press conferences.  This position serves as the primary liaison with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Defense on a variety of defense related issues.  The incumbent is responsible for scheduling meetings, appointments, hotel reservations and all other arrangements associated with travel for DAO members and high-level visiting delegations.  Serves as the DAO’s primary contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding aircraft and ship clearances.


 


 

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: Must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in communications, involving written and verbal translating/interpreting from/to English in an official capacity.

JOB KNOWLEDGE: Incumbent will be expected to develop intimate knowledge of the structures and long-term development plan of the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense, the General Staff and the Armed Forces of Bulgaria.  Incumbent should understand the capabilities of the equipment used by the Bulgarian Armed Forces.  Detailed knowledge of Bulgarian and U.S. military, political and economic terminology and acronyms related to programs and equipment will be required.  Thorough knowledge of American and Bulgarian customs, courtesies and protocol will be required.


 

Education Requirements:

EDUCATION: At least 2 years college or university studies (no specific field required).

  • Must be able to communicate concisely and confidently

  • High level of initiative is expected

  • Expert working knowledge of computers and business software applications (Microsoft Suite) is required

  • Ability to work independently and organize priorities is a must

  • Ability to prepare and present briefings for small to medium audiences is expected

  • Must be able to analyze military trends and formulate briefing summaries

  • Must be flexible and adjust personal schedule to meet occasional after hour job requirements

  • Must be able to adapt to short notice schedule changes

  • Some overtime is required and the ability to travel in and out of Bulgaria on occasion is necessary
