Travels with Chief of Mission and visiting U.S. delegations to various locations throughout Tunisia.

Duties

Basic Function of the Position:  Serves as the official simultaneous / consecutive interpreter in three languages (English, French and Arabic) for the Chief of Mission (COM), Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM), high-level visiting U.S. officials, delegations, and other Embassy sections and agencies as assigned.  Coordinates interpreting logistics with Embassy sections and contacts for COM's field visits and leads major interpreting assignments.  Provides cultural advice to COM on communication with Tunisian counterparts and reviews written materials for the appropriateness of the cultural content before dissemination.  The incumbent backstops the embassy translator. 

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: Five years (5) of demonstrated English-Arabic, Arabic-English, English-French, and French-English consecutive and simultaneous interpreting as well as translation in a government, business, or academic setting, with at least one year of experience in conference interpreting.


JOB KNOWLEDGE: A broad knowledge of a wide range of specialized technical contexts (e.g. economic, political, legal, military, etc.) to participate in any conversation, meeting, or conference with fluency and precision is required.  A good understanding of Tunisia's major political and business issues as well as recent developments in American-Arab relations.  The incumbent must be familiar with the Tunisian political system and personalities and must be aware of the differences between American and Tunisian political, business, and legal environments.  The incumbent is also expected to pay particular attention to cultural sensitivities and differences between Western and North African cultural norms.  The incumbent must have good technical writing skills (grammar, content, and style in English, Arabic, and French).

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree, in Translation studies, Interpreting studies, relevant linguistic discipline, English literature, Modern languages, Political Science, Business, or similar field is required.


 


 

Evaluations:

LANGUAGE:  Level V (Advanced proficiency) in English, French and Arabic; speaking and reading. This will be tested.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  The incumbent must posses technical skills required for successful completion of tasks, such as simultaneous, consecutive, and whispered interpreting as well as fully understand and be able to apply translation techniques correctly and quickly while translating.  He/she must also express ideas in Arabic, French or English instantly, accurately, idiomatically, and completely in the appropriate style and with the original intent of the speaker/writer.  Ability to write in English, Arabic, and French with nearly the accuracy of a well-educated native speaker.  Ability to make public speeches (good diction, clear articulation, etc.) and stay calm under pressure while interpreting is required.  Excellent interpersonal skills, social and cultural sensitivity, sound judgement, and capability of working with others in a sensitive environment.

Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Tunis, Tunisia may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.


For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.


The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

* IMPORTANT:  Applicants who claim status as a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of their most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), equivalent documentation, or certification.  A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant. The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.  Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.
