Conduct epidemiologic and clinical research on HIV infection, AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and related topics at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/ Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP) Thailand Silom Community Clinic @TropMed (SCC). This position will oversee an entire unit that consists of clinical services, regulatory, pharmacy, physician, data management, and clinic laboratory teams. With guidance from the Behavioral and Clinical Research Section Chief, the incumbent independently plans and coordinates new research activities, negotiates scientific collaborations with Thai institutions, designs studies, writes research protocols, supervises study implementation, conduct and analysis of data, and prepares and presents trial results.

Work closely with the Behavioral and Clinical Research Section Chief to: 1) ensure that science conducted by SCC is of the highest scientific and ethical standards; 2) provide technical consultation on complex Thai and US policies related to research practice; and 3) educate SCC staff and external partners on scientific research methods, including epidemiology, biostatistics, and ethics.

Also conduct clinical trials at  SCC. Incumbent will provide clinical care and \treatment for early HIV infection, tuberculosis, and  other STDs for cohort members and potential enrollees. Will also provide feedback to clinic nurses and counselors regarding clinical issues in HIV infection and sexually transmitted diseases. He/she will also attend the regular clinic staff and cohort study meetings and working with the Clinical Nursing Chief, ensure proper initial and ongoing training of clinic staff. 

Qualifications and Evaluations


EXPERIENCE:  At least five years of progressively responsible work experience in epidemiology or public health practice, epidemiological research, clinical medical research. or related biomedical research, including one year of supervisory experience is required.


  • Incumbent is required to have a broad perspective and thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of epidemiologic, biomedical, or related scientific research, including facility with research design concepts and basic Quality Control and Assurance. Familiarity with clinical or epidemiologic aspects of HIV/AIDS prevention and care is necessary.

  • Incumbent is required to have an advanced knowledge of public health programs and strategies to be able to explain to partners and senior health officials how CDC approaches research and why it is undertaking specific types of activities.

  • Incumbent is required to have an advanced and detailed knowledge of the Thailand public health and medical systems to be able to explain to senior expatriate staff as well as to enable the integration of CDC-developed research activities appropriately into the Thai environment.

  • Incumbent is required to have advanced knowledge of large network or consortium research trials and the process for requesting, bidding, implementing, and closing out of these studies.

  • Standard knowledge of computer software packages including word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, graphics and the statistical packages.

Education Requirements:

EDUCATION: M.D. degree or Ph.D. degree in medical science or biological science, such as Epidemiology, Epidemiology Research, Clinical Medical Research, Biomedical research, or Public Health is required.  Licensed to practice medicine in Thailand is required.


LANGUAGE:  Level IV (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing Thai and English are required.  Please clarify level of your THAI and ENGLISH language skill.  A copy of valid TOEIC score at least 855 is required by the closing date (This may be tested).


  • Must be able to recognize protocol deviation, to independently compose Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Site Specific Protocols (SSPs), and clinical study forms such as Clinical Research Forms (CRFs).

  • Must be able to translate and interpret complex technical scientific matter from English to Thai and vice versa.

  • Must be able to understand and communicate with senior-level policy-makers in both English and Thai to assure mutual understanding of technical, medical and other professional terminology.

Agency Benefits:

Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Thailand may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.

The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.
