Duties

The job holder serves as the Digital Media Specialist in the Public Diplomacy office of the U.S. Mission to NATO (USNATO) and is responsible for the overall development, coordination, and direction of USNATO digital communication strategy and manages its social media platforms, including the official website.  Designs and produces digital content, campaigns, and events tailored to USNATO’s audiences; designs and produces digital content and creates social media plans and tool kits for use by over 30 U.S. embassies and missions. Develops and maintains key relationships, provides guidance and training, is fully conversant on policy, develops digital media content, and supports media tours and traditional media efforts.  Supervises a digital media intern.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: Minimum three years working in the field of corporate or government digital communication strategy and management or as a journalist, with NATO-related institutions, think tanks, or in a public affairs office dedicated to NATO, defense and security, or U.S. issues.


JOB KNOWLEDGE:  A sound knowledge and understanding of digital communication strategy and strong experience in generating digital communication engagements. A good understanding of new technology in the digital communication area, the ability to oversee USNATO’s digital engagement strategy, supervise projects, and train Embassy colleagues and officers in social media and digital communication tradecraft. A sound knowledge of major issues of U.S.-NATO relations and of the media landscape in Brussels. Experience with and knowledge of graphic arts, photography, and audio-visual software and equipment, including overseeing video projects and knowledge of using PC and Macintosh operating systems and design/editing software.

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in the international relations, journalism, communications, information science, graphic design or website development.  

Evaluations:

LANGUAGE:  Speaking/reading/writing: fluency in English.  This may be tested. 


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Strong judgment and professional experience in generating communication strategies adapted to the digital age and compliant with the Department of State’s overarching digital engagement strategy. Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently, to set priorities, and to produce a large volume of work accurately and occasionally under pressure. Tact and professional ability to develop access to and maintain good relations with a wide range of NATO-related institutional contacts, and the media. Must stay abreast of breaking news and issues affecting the U.S.-NATO relationship in a complex global environment. Ability to make sound recommendations to management that result in effectively promoting U.S. policies to those with opposing points of view.

The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.
